Chính Proposes Strategic Guarantees for Global Poverty Eradication at G20 Summit

G20 Rio de Janeiro

Rio De Janeiro, The Gulf Observer: Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính of Vietnam addressed the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, presenting three strategic guarantees to drive global poverty eradication. His proposals emphasized the need for stronger political will, enhanced resources, and decisive actions to combat poverty and foster sustainable development worldwide.

The Vietnamese leader highlighted poverty eradication as a humanitarian mission and a cornerstone for global peace, security, and stability. Showcasing Vietnam’s transformation from a war-torn nation to an exemplar in poverty alleviation, Chính shared the country’s achievements, including meeting the UN Millennium Development Goals a decade early. Vietnam has reduced its poverty rate from over 58% in the 1990s to just 1.9% in 2024, becoming a global leader in agricultural exports.

Prime Minister Chính underscored Vietnam’s commitment to eliminating all temporary and dilapidated housing by 2025—five years ahead of schedule. He outlined three lessons from Vietnam’s success:

  1. Prioritizing social equity, welfare, and environmental sustainability alongside economic growth.
  2. Establishing agriculture as an economic pillar while ensuring food security.
  3. Centering people as the driving force for development, with investments in high-quality human resources, science, and innovation.

Building on these principles, Chính proposed three strategic guarantees:

  1. Promoting Peace and Development Cooperation: He urged the G20 to lead efforts in maintaining peace and stability, avoiding politicization of science, and fostering global collaboration in trade, agriculture, and food security.
  2. Ensuring Resilient Agri-Food Systems: He called for technology transfer, concessional financing, and sustainable agricultural practices to combat climate change and ensure food security, particularly in low-income nations.
  3. Investing in People: He emphasized education, social welfare, and inclusive policies as key to creating harmonious societies and sustainable growth.

Quoting President Hồ Chí Minh’s adage, “Solidarity is invincible,” Chính reaffirmed Vietnam’s commitment to multilateralism and international solidarity in eradicating hunger and achieving sustainable development. He expressed Vietnam’s readiness to share its experiences and collaborate with G20 nations and international organizations through South-South and trilateral initiatives.

The 2024 G20 Summit, the largest in history, welcomed representatives from 21 G20 members, 19 invited countries, and 15 international organizations. Discussions focused on combating poverty, promoting inclusive development, and advancing financial support for low-income nations. Leaders also emphasized addressing global inequalities, supporting vulnerable communities, and reforming international institutions for a more equitable world order.

In the afternoon session on “Reforming Global Governance Institutions,” Chính voiced Vietnam’s support for creating equitable and effective mechanisms under Brazil’s leadership during its G20 Presidency. The summit will continue on November 19, with Prime Minister Chính set to deliver remarks on sustainable development and energy transition.
