Iran Condemns Israeli Attacks on Syria at UN Security Council

Security Council

New York, The Gulf Observer: Iran’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Amir Saeed Iravani, has strongly condemned Israel’s recent military attacks on Syria, describing them as deliberate acts of aggression and flagrant violations of international law and the UN Charter. His remarks were delivered during a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) meeting held to discuss the deteriorating situation in Syria.

In his formal statement, Ambassador Iravani extended congratulations to Pakistan on assuming the Security Council Presidency for July, while also recognizing Guyana’s effective leadership in the previous month.

Israel’s Actions Described as Aggressive and Unlawful

Ambassador Iravani denounced Israel’s airstrikes, including those targeting the Syrian capital, Damascus, saying they were aimed at critical infrastructure and public and governmental facilities, and represent a dangerous escalation by a regime that continues to illegally occupy Syrian territory, including the Golan Heights.

“These deliberate acts of aggression, carried out with impunity, are a direct consequence of the Council’s silence and the international community’s failure to act,” Iravani said.

He stressed that Israel’s illegal occupation of the Syrian Golan Heights, combined with settlement expansion and annexation, directly defies UN Security Council resolutions and the UN Charter.

Accusations of Western Complicity

Iravani accused the United States and some Western countries of enabling Israel’s actions through unconditional political and military support, asserting that such backing has emboldened Israel to continue its “atrocious crimes” across the region.

He further claimed that the most recent aggression follows Israel’s 12-day military campaign targeting Iranian sites, including IAEA-monitored peaceful nuclear facilities and civilian infrastructure. These strikes, according to Iravani, led to the deaths of over 1,100 civilians, including 41 children and 126 women, and destroyed seven hospitals, eleven ambulances, and more than 3,500 homes.

“These undeniable facts reveal the criminal and aggressive nature of the Israeli regime,” he stated.

Call for Action and Support for Syria

Ambassador Iravani called on the Security Council to fulfill its responsibilities by ending Israel’s impunity and ensuring accountability for repeated violations of international law. He emphasized that inaction only emboldens aggressors, especially at a time when Israel is accused of committing mass atrocities in Gaza, including the deliberate targeting of civilians and the use of starvation as a method of warfare.

He reaffirmed Iran’s unwavering support for the sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity of Syria, and urged the Syrian interim government to uphold the rights of minorities and pursue peace through inclusive dialogue.

Iravani concluded by underscoring the need for strict adherence to international law and the UN Charter, rejecting Israel’s claims of protecting minority rights in Syria as a false pretext for unlawful interventions.

“The Israeli regime has absolutely no legal or moral justification to violate Syria’s sovereignty or interfere in its internal affairs. These illegal actions must be unequivocally condemned by this Council,” he declared.

The session concluded with calls from several member states for restraint, adherence to international law, and the de-escalation of tensions in the region.
