New York

Tehran, The Gulf Observer: Deputy Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran for Legal and International Affairs, Kazem Gharibabadi, concluded a three-day diplomatic mission to New York City, during which he held extensive consultations and participated in a series of high-level meetings. He shared details of his engagements via his official account on X on Thursday.

Gharibabadi’s visit focused primarily on addressing the recent aggression by the Israeli regime and the United States against Iran, Iran’s response, and broader regional and international security issues. His key engagements included:

United Nations Security Council (UNSC) Meetings: Gharibabadi addressed two sessions of the UNSC chaired by Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister. In one session, he delivered a speech strongly condemning the acts of aggression by the Israeli regime and the U.S. against Iran and emphasized Iran’s firm and proportional response. He warned that any repeat of such attacks would be met with a more severe response. In the other session, focused on the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, he denounced the war crimes committed by the Israeli regime and proposed six actionable measures to counter the atrocities.

Consultations with UN Member States: Gharibabadi met with representatives of over 110 UN member states to highlight the legal, humanitarian, and security dimensions of the recent acts of aggression and their impact on international peace and stability.

Engagements with Non-Permanent UNSC Members: In a separate meeting, he consulted with the ten non-permanent members of the Security Council on the aggression against Iran, the status of Iran’s cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) following the attacks on peaceful nuclear facilities, and the implementation of UNSC Resolution 2231.

Strategic Coordination with China and Russia: Gharibabadi held discussions with the permanent representatives of China and Russia to the UN to exchange views on ongoing regional developments and coordinate positions on key international matters.

Meeting with the Group of Friends in Defense of the UN Charter: The Deputy Minister conferred with representatives of this group, comprising over twenty countries, to deliberate on current global issues and strengthen multilateral coordination.

Exchange with UN Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs: The discussions centered on the recent aggression, UNSC Resolution 2231, and the broader legal and diplomatic implications for Iran.

Engagement with the ICRC: During his meeting with the President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Gharibabadi firmly rejected Israel’s justification of “self-defense” for its military strike on Iranian territory, calling it a blatant violation of the UN Charter and devoid of any legal legitimacy.

Dialogue with International Media: Gharibabadi met with representatives from over twenty major international media outlets. He stressed the media’s responsibility to report on the aggression against Iran in a fair and unbiased manner. He also outlined Iran’s conditions for potential negotiations with the United States and strongly criticized what he described as the IAEA’s politicized and damaging conduct amid recent developments.

The Deputy Foreign Minister’s visit to New York comes at a time of heightened regional tensions and was aimed at mobilizing international support, advancing Iran’s legal and diplomatic position, and countering narratives justifying aggression against its sovereignty.
