Kazakhstan Accedes to UN Convention on Privileges and Immunities of Specialized Agencies

Astana, The Gulf Observer: Kazakhstan has completed the procedures to accede to the 1947 United Nations Convention on the Privileges and Immunities of the Specialized Agencies, the Kazakh Foreign Ministry said.

The UN Secretariat has officially notified Kazakhstan of the completion of the accession process to the Convention, which was adopted on November 21, 1947.

The Convention establishes a common legal framework designed to safeguard the independence of UN specialized agencies and provides guarantees concerning diplomatic status and immunity for their activities, property and personnel.

Kazakhstan’s accession is expected to provide an enhanced legal basis for the activities of UN specialized agencies in the country and further strengthen cooperation between Kazakhstan and the UN system.

According to the Kazakh Foreign Ministry, accession to the Convention will also facilitate the expansion of the programme activities, financing and staffing of UN specialized agencies, while creating additional legal opportunities for these agencies to operate in Kazakhstan and organize international events, including seminars, conferences and symposia.

Kazakhstan currently hosts country and regional offices of several UN specialized agencies, including the World Health Organization, Food and Agriculture Organization, International Labour Organization and UNESCO.

The country continues to cooperate with UN structures across a wide range of areas, including sustainable development, peace and security, and human rights. Kazakhstan has also placed emphasis on strengthening multilateral cooperation and enhancing the effectiveness of the UN’s regional presence in Central Asia.

The UN Treaty Collection lists the Convention as having entered into force on December 2, 1948.
