Morocco, Austria Sign Strategic Dialogue MoU to Deepen Bilateral Cooperation

Morocco

Agadir, The Gulf Observer: Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Bourita and Austria’s Federal Minister for European and International Affairs Beate Meinl-Reisinger have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Vienna to establish a structured strategic dialogue aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation across key sectors.

The agreement provides a formal framework for enhanced consultations and coordination, particularly in political and economic domains, while promoting regular exchanges on bilateral, regional, and international issues of mutual interest.

In a statement, Morocco’s Foreign Ministry said the MoU reflects both countries’ shared belief that sustained dialogue and information exchange will deepen mutual understanding and further consolidate ties built over centuries of diplomatic engagement. Morocco and Austria marked the 240th anniversary of their diplomatic relations on February 28, 2023, underscoring the historic depth of their partnership.

The ministry noted that the agreement aligns with the principles of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, reaffirming the importance of diplomatic cooperation and the privileged nature of Morocco-Austria relations.

Austria also expressed support for Morocco’s efforts to promote a renewed model of South-South cooperation, recognizing Rabat’s growing role as a diplomatic and economic bridge across Africa. Both sides emphasized the importance of strengthening engagement between the European Union and its southern neighbors within a broader Euro-African framework.

During the visit, Austria reiterated its backing for United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797, which supports the efforts of the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy to advance negotiations on the Moroccan autonomy initiative. The resolution aims to achieve a just, lasting, and mutually acceptable political solution.

Vienna also acknowledged Morocco’s willingness to further clarify the implementation of autonomy under its sovereignty, a position that aligns with growing international support for Morocco’s proposal following the adoption of Resolution 2797 on October 31, 2025.

The MoU marks a significant step in enhancing Morocco-Austria relations, reinforcing diplomatic engagement and paving the way for broader cooperation at both bilateral and multilateral levels.
