Morocco Reaffirms Commitment to African Health Sovereignty at AU Extraordinary Summit
Accra, The Gulf Observer: Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita, represented King Mohammed VI at the African Union (AU) Extraordinary Summit held in Accra on Wednesday, where African leaders discussed strategies to eliminate AIDS by 2030, improve maternal health, strengthen health systems, and address communicable and non-communicable diseases across the continent.
According to a statement issued by Morocco’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Bourita attended the high-level summit on the instructions of King Mohammed VI and conveyed the Kingdom’s vision for strengthening Africa’s health sector through solidarity, social justice, and the sharing of expertise.
Addressing the summit, Bourita underscored Morocco’s commitment to promoting African health sovereignty under the leadership of King Mohammed VI, describing health as a strategic pillar of the Kingdom’s continental cooperation.
He said Morocco’s approach aligns with the summit’s key priorities, including expanding local pharmaceutical manufacturing, mobilising innovative financing, and strengthening political governance to build resilient and sustainable healthcare systems across Africa.
The summit brought together African leaders to review progress and outline future strategies aimed at eliminating AIDS by 2030, reducing preventable maternal deaths, combating endemic communicable and non-communicable diseases, and reinforcing health systems throughout the continent.
Participants also examined the African Union’s roadmap through 2030 and beyond, following decisions adopted during the AU’s 38th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government, with a focus on sustaining the HIV/AIDS response, enhancing health security, and improving the resilience of Africa’s healthcare systems.
The Moroccan delegation attending the summit also included senior representatives from the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Economy and Finance.
