President Prabowo Vows to Achieve Energy Self-Sufficiency

Jakarta, The Gulf Observer: President Prabowo Subianto has reaffirmed Indonesia’s commitment to reducing its reliance on imported fuel and achieving national energy self-sufficiency, stating that such a transition could unlock significant fiscal resources for essential public services.
Speaking at the 49th Indonesian Petroleum Association Convention and Exhibition (IPA Convex) in Jakarta on Wednesday, President Prabowo noted that Indonesia currently allocates approximately US$40 billion annually to fuel imports. These funds, he said, could be redirected to strategic government programs in sectors such as education, healthcare, and poverty alleviation.
“This is the potential (of budget) that we can actually use to help our people in strategic areas, such as education and health,” the President said, underscoring the broader developmental impact of reducing energy import dependence.
To realize this vision, he called for enhanced collaboration among the government, private sector, and state-owned enterprises (SOEs). “I encourage all stakeholders from within and outside the country; please utilize the opportunities we provide,” he urged.
President Prabowo emphasized that Indonesia possesses significant untapped energy reserves, including potential in new and renewable energy sources. He also highlighted the readiness of the Indonesian Investment Management Agency, Danantara, to invest in strategic energy projects, in partnership with international investors.
“We have prepared a large investment fund from Danantara Indonesia, which is also ready to invest strategically in available energy projects, along with foreign partners, to drive our needs,” he stated.
Expressing optimism about the country’s energy future, Prabowo added, “We are very optimistic that soon we will not only be self-sufficient in energy, but we will again supply energy to the world.”
The IPA Convex, held from May 20 to 22 at the Indonesia Convention Exhibition (ICE) BSD, is an annual gathering of stakeholders from across the global energy sector. This year’s event is attended by delegates from 60 countries, including CEOs of leading international energy companies and ambassadors from Egypt, Oman, the United Arab Emirates, and Malaysia.
President Prabowo’s presence marks the first time in a decade that an Indonesian president has attended the IPA Convex, signaling the administration’s renewed focus on energy independence and sectoral reform.
