President Tokayev Meets with WTO Director General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala
Astana, The Gulf Observer: President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev of Kazakhstan held a meeting with Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the Director General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), as reported by Akorda.
President Tokayev warmly welcomed Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, emphasizing Kazakhstan’s commitment to expanding its cooperation with the WTO. “We are convinced that under your leadership, international multilateral trade will undergo significant transformation aimed at eliminating existing trade barriers and creating equal conditions,” President Tokayev stated. He also highlighted the importance of Okonjo-Iweala’s visit to Almaty and expressed gratitude for the close cooperation with the WTO. Reflecting on Kazakhstan’s role in presiding over the 12th Ministerial Conference, Tokayev noted it was a great responsibility and honor, during which the WTO members adopted crucial reforms for the Organization.
President Tokayev further emphasized Kazakhstan’s dedication to maintaining an open economy despite the rising tide of global protectionism and trade barriers. He noted that Kazakhstan currently trades with 180 countries, and over the past three years, its foreign trade volume has surged by 53%, reaching $160 billion. He also mentioned a recent decree aimed at liberalizing the economy, promoting fair competition, protecting the freedom of enterprise, and reducing state involvement in the economy.
Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala praised Kazakhstan’s significant contribution as the chair of the 12th WTO Ministerial Conference, particularly in adopting key global trade solutions. During the meeting, President Tokayev stressed the importance of the Central Asia Trade Policy Forum, currently being held in Almaty, in promoting regional economic cooperation and integrating Central Asian countries into the multilateral trade system.
In recognition of her contributions to enhancing the system of multilateral trade and the global role of the WTO, President Tokayev awarded Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala the Dostyk Order of 2nd degree.
