Professor Chacha Nyaigotti-Chacha Appointed Chairperson of University of Nairobi Council in Major Overhaul of University Leadership

Nairobi, The Gulf Observer: In a sweeping restructuring of university leadership across Kenya, Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos Ogamba has appointed Professor Chacha Nyaigotti-Chacha as the new Chairperson of the University of Nairobi Council. The announcement was made through a gazette notice dated July 25, 2025, under Section 36(1)(a) of the Universities Act.

Professor Nyaigotti-Chacha will serve a three-year term alongside newly appointed council members Dr John Kakonge, Samuel Njuguna Kimani, Dr Jonathan Ltipalei Lodompui, and Mary Amuyunzu. The changes come shortly after the exoneration of former UoN Council Chairperson Amukowa Anangwe and others, following the withdrawal of a KSh32.4 million graft case by the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The overhaul extended to several other public universities across the country. At Kenyatta University, Joash Mokamba Keraita and Isaac Opuya Litali were appointed as council members, with the reappointment of Maj. Gen. (Retd) Bashir Yusuf and Alice Waruguru Muita.

Professor James Sang has been appointed as the new Chairperson of Egerton University Council, joined by Mohamed Ahmed Mohamed and Amos Okello. Kisii University saw the reappointment of Josephat Kipsoy Sawe and the appointments of Dr Pamela Awuor Ochieng, Rev Prof Peter Mageto, and Dr Mwenda Makathimo.

At the University of Eldoret, Dr Peter Onchari Kereri was reappointed, with Evelyne Timpiyan Legis and Razoah Vitisia joining the council. Meanwhile, Professor P.M. Kutima was named Chairperson of the University of Embu Council, accompanied by Christine Guchu.

Kirinyaga University welcomed Silas Jakakimba, Ibrahim Khamis Mutwafy, Ursula Sabina Oyatsi, and Margaret Kathambi Gitonga as new council members. Murang’a University of Technology received Allan Mugambi Michael, Amran Mohamed Ali, Getrude Chemutai Kurgat, and Abdul Ramadhan Odhiambo.

Garissa University appointed John Karani Ndiwa, Jonah N. Kariuki (CPA), and Dr Alice Otwala, with Hassan Sheikh Mohamed reappointed for another term. Mama Ngina University College saw five new appointments: Lizzie Chongoti, Dr Joyce Kemunto Nyabuti, Gilbert Wafula Nyongesa, Thomas Meigkwelly Leremore, and Davies Mukuria.

Nyandarua University College received Kirkwony Sophy, Fatuma Abdi, Wafula Chelongo, Julius Obare Mokogi (CPA), and Kariuki Peter Maru. At Bomet University College, Professor John Shiundu was named Chairperson, joined by Dr Emily Kwamboka Nyagaram, Rose Chepkorir, and Fredrick Njoroge, while Reuben Butaki was reappointed.

Koitaleel Samoei University College appointed Professor Josephat Kipkoech Yego as Chairperson, along with Elizabeth Mjomba and Professor Raphael Kapiyo. Moi University added Mercy Ringa Njagi to its council, and Laikipia University appointed Eliazer Kipyego Kogey.

Willy Kioko Malile was appointed to Rongo University Council, while Dr Idle Omar Farah was reappointed as Chairperson of the Technical University of Kenya. Engineer John Nyambok was appointed as a new member.

Karatina University received new members David Joseph Osero and Edward Kobuthi, while David Opiyo was reappointed. At South Eastern Kenya University, David Kipngetich Koech was appointed as a council member.
