Sri Lankan President

Colombo, The Gulf Observer: Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, in his message on the occasion of Thai Pongal, underscored the festival’s deep spiritual, cultural, and environmental significance, describing it as a celebration of gratitude, renewal, and collective hope for the future.

In his message issued on 15 January, the President noted that Thai Pongal, observed with devotion by Hindu devotees across the world, is dedicated to expressing gratitude to the Sun God, to cattle such as cows and bulls that support agriculture, and to nature itself. He emphasized that while the festival symbolizes prosperity and thankfulness for a bountiful harvest, it also serves as an invitation to embark on a new journey toward the future with courage and confidence.

Reflecting on the challenges faced by the nation, President Dissanayake referred to the aftermath of the greatest natural disaster Sri Lanka has experienced in recent times. He stated that the country is currently undertaking the largest reconstruction effort in its history, driven by immense effort and firm determination. On the occasion of Thai Pongal, he called upon all citizens to strengthen their unity and join hands more resolutely in this collective national endeavour.

The President further highlighted the relevance of Thai Pongal in the present context, noting that at a time when the need to reconnect with nature is felt more strongly than ever, the festival’s deep bond with the natural world adds profound meaning to individual lives and to society as a whole.

Expressing optimism and hope, President Dissanayake reaffirmed the belief that “there is light after every darkness.” As the nation moves forward with unity and unwavering resolve to overcome challenges and build “A Thriving Nation – A Beautiful Life,” he expressed hope that this year’s Thai Pongal celebration would be a great blessing.

The President concluded by extending his heartfelt best wishes for a joyous and prosperous Thai Pongal to all Sri Lankan Tamils and to Tamils living across the world.
