Türkiye Urges Iraq to Officially Recognize PKK as a Terrorist Group
Baghdad, The Gulf Observer: Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has called on Iraq to officially designate the PKK as a terrorist group, emphasizing the need for joint efforts to combat terrorism during a visit to Baghdad.
Speaking at a joint press conference with Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein on Saturday, Fidan highlighted Türkiye’s expectation that Iraq, which already declared the PKK a “banned organization” in March 2024, take the next step by formally recognizing them as terrorists.
“Our ultimate expectation is clear: for Iraq to officially recognize the PKK as a terrorist organization,” Fidan stated. He underscored the importance of Türkiye, Iraq, and Syria working together to eliminate both the PKK and Daesh threats.
The meeting came a day after PKK terrorists killed two Iraqi border guards, an attack that Fidan said further underscored the urgency of coordinated action against terrorism.
In March 2024, Iraq classified the PKK as a “banned organization,” a move welcomed by Türkiye. Following this, the two nations signed agreements to combat terrorism, including the establishment of joint cooperation centers in Baghdad and Bashika. However, Iraq has yet to officially recognize the PKK as a terrorist group.
The Turkish Foreign Ministry reiterated its stance on Saturday, with spokesperson Oncu Keceli calling the PKK a common threat to the national security of both nations. “The PKK also violates Iraq’s sovereignty and undermines stability in the region,” Keceli said, expressing condolences for the victims of the latest attack.
The PKK, active in Iraq, has been responsible for numerous attacks that disrupt security and prevent development in villages under its control. It also carries out cross-border attacks against Türkiye from its hideouts in Iraq.
In its 40-year campaign of terror, the PKK—recognized as a terrorist organization by Türkiye, the United States, and the European Union—has caused over 40,000 deaths, including women, children, and the elderly.
Both Türkiye and Iraq reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation in the fight against terrorism and ensuring regional security.
