UAE Reaffirms Commitment to Ocean Sustainability on World Oceans Day

Ocean Sustainability

Abu Dhabi, The Gulf Observer: On the occasion of World Oceans Day, Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, reaffirmed the United Arab Emirates’ steadfast commitment to protecting and sustaining ocean ecosystems as an essential global and national resource.

Speaking under this year’s global theme, “Wonder: Sustaining What Sustains Us,” Dr. Al Dahak emphasized the oceans’ irreplaceable role in regulating the Earth’s climate, supporting biodiversity, and sustaining human livelihoods.

“Covering over 70 percent of the Earth’s surface, our oceans are undeniably essential to human lives and livelihoods. From climate regulation to food security, they are the lifeblood of our planet,” she stated. “Yet today, they face unprecedented threats — from coral bleaching and rising sea levels to overfishing and pollution.”

Highlighting the UAE’s maritime heritage, Dr. Al Dahak underlined the urgency for action, stressing that the nation is actively working to restore marine ecosystems, mitigate oceanic threats, and safeguard marine biodiversity for future generations.

She noted key national initiatives including:

  • A coral rehabilitation project aiming to outplant over 4 million coral colonies by 2030.
  • A national goal to plant 100 million mangrove trees by 2030, reinforcing carbon sequestration and coastal protection efforts.

On the international front, Dr. Al Dahak lauded the UAE’s leadership in sustainable ocean management, proudly noting that the country is the first in the Middle East to join the ‘100% Alliance’, a UN initiative urging coastal nations to sustainably manage all ocean areas under their jurisdiction.

“Our commitment to ocean health goes beyond borders. It is a global responsibility — and one the UAE is proud to uphold through policy, innovation, and international cooperation.”

In her closing remarks, Dr. Al Dahak called on all individuals to become ocean advocates, encouraging responsible seafood choices, reducing plastic use, and fostering ocean stewardship among youth.

“Every action counts. Let us protect the wonder of our oceans — not just for today, but for generations to come.”

World Oceans Day serves as a powerful reminder of the collective responsibility to protect Earth’s marine resources and the UAE’s vision to lead by example in securing a sustainable ocean future.
