Vietnam Plans Major Expansion of International Fibre Optic Cable System by 2030
Hanoi, The Gulf Observer: Vietnam’s Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC) has approved a strategic plan to significantly expand the country’s international fibre optic cable system. By 2030, Vietnam aims to add at least ten new undersea cables, increasing the total to a minimum of 15 undersea routes.
This ambitious expansion underscores the crucial role of Vietnam’s international fibre optic cable system in the nation’s digital infrastructure. Prioritizing investment in this area is essential to ensure robust international connectivity and to support the growth of Vietnam’s digital economy and society.
The strategy highlights the necessity of sufficient capacity to enable Vietnamese cities to emerge as regional data centers. The development of the international fibre optic cable system is designed to enhance international connectivity, thereby promoting the digital economy, digital society, and bolstering defense and security.
State-owned enterprises are expected to lead the foundational development of the cable system, facilitating rapid advancements for both domestic and foreign businesses in Vietnam’s international fibre optic network.
Looking ahead, the vision for 2035 positions Vietnam’s fibre optic cable system among the regional leaders in terms of quantity, capacity, and quality. The country aims to become a major player in cloud computing services, integrating itself as a key link in regional and international digital infrastructure and data transmission.
Additionally, by 2030, Vietnam plans to introduce at least two more international land fibre optic cable lines, ensuring that land-based capacity accounts for at least 15 percent of the total actual used capacity of the marine system. This comprehensive strategy reflects Vietnam’s commitment to advancing its digital connectivity and infrastructure on a global scale.
