Wang Yi Calls for Correct Understanding and Positive Cooperation with Canada
Munich, The Gulf Observer: Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi expressed hope for Canada to establish a correct understanding of China, take a long-term perspective on bilateral relations, and foster a positive outlook for practical cooperation during a meeting with his Canadian counterpart, Melanie Joly, on Saturday.
Highlighting the historical significance of China-Canada relations, Wang emphasized that the current challenging situation is not the desired outcome for China. Stressing the importance of stabilizing and improving these relations, Wang noted the high complementarity of the two economies, with no conflict of fundamental interests.
Wang dispelled the notion of rivalry, asserting that China and Canada should be partners in cooperation rather than adversaries. Recognizing the differences in systems, history, and culture, Wang urged mutual respect, learning, and understanding to build consensus, rebuild trust, and achieve mutually beneficial cooperation.
The Chinese Foreign Minister urged a halt to the promotion of the “China threat” theory, the spread of false allegations regarding Chinese interference in Canada’s internal affairs, and the exaggeration of national security concerns in trade, science, and technology exchanges.
Emphasizing the need to respect each other’s core interests, Wang called for concrete actions to preserve the political foundation of bilateral relations. The meeting also addressed global issues, with both sides exchanging views on the conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza.
Minister Joly extended Chinese New Year greetings and affirmed Canada’s commitment to pragmatic diplomacy and improving bilateral relations. She expressed willingness to collaborate with China in overcoming difficulties, building trust, and enhancing cooperation in climate change, biodiversity, public health, and other fields. Joly reassured China of Canada’s adherence to the one-China policy.
The discussions reflect a mutual commitment to dialogue, understanding, and cooperation, as both nations navigate challenges and seek common ground on shared global concerns.
