Wang Yi Meets with Iranian Deputy FM Safari at SCO Meeting

Astana, The Gulf Observer: Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Mahdi Safari on Tuesday during the Council of Foreign Ministers meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). The discussion underscored the robust cooperation between China and Iran, even as both nations mourn the tragic losses of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian in a recent helicopter crash.

Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, reiterated China’s condolences and sympathy over the deaths of Raisi and Amir-Abdollahian. “The unfortunate incident has shocked the world,” Wang said. “Iran has lost outstanding leaders, and China has lost good friends and partners.”

Chinese President Xi Jinping has sent a message of condolence to Iranian leaders, Wang noted. He affirmed that China stands firmly with its Iranian friends during this difficult time. “We believe that under the leadership of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, the Iranian government and people will turn their grief into strength, resolutely advance their established strategies, and maintain national stability and development.”

Wang emphasized that irrespective of changes in the global situation, China will continue to strengthen strategic cooperation with Iran, safeguard common interests, and work towards regional and global peace.

Deputy Foreign Minister Safari expressed deep gratitude to President Xi and Foreign Minister Wang for their early condolences and steadfast support. He assured that Iran’s domestic and foreign policies will remain steadfast and that the country will continue its national development under the leadership of Supreme Leader Khamenei.

“Iran attaches great importance to its relationship with China and is committed to enhancing cooperation in political, economic, cultural, and other fields,” Safari stated. He also appreciated China’s role in promoting reconciliation between Iran and Saudi Arabia and expressed Iran’s willingness to continue improving relations with other countries in the region.

The meeting between Wang and Safari highlights the enduring partnership between China and Iran, reaffirming their commitment to mutual support and cooperation in the face of shared challenges and profound losses.
