Wang Yi Reaffirms China's Commitment to Multilateralism at BRICS Foreign Ministers' Meeting

Rio de Janeiro, The Gulf Observer: Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Monday reaffirmed China’s steadfast commitment to upholding multilateralism and safeguarding multilateral trade rules during the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting held in Rio de Janeiro.

Speaking at the session, Wang, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, criticized the United States for pursuing unilateralism and placing its own interests above the broader international community. He stressed that multilateral trade principles must be firmly defended to ensure a fair and just global trading environment.

“While the United States has long benefited immensely from free trade, it is now resorting to tariffs as a means of coercion, making exorbitant demands on other nations,” Wang stated. He cautioned that acquiescence to such actions would only embolden further acts of bullying in international relations.

In his remarks, Wang called on BRICS countries to work in solidarity to oppose all forms of protectionism and to jointly uphold a rules-based multilateral trading system, with the World Trade Organization (WTO) at its core.

He emphasized that defending multilateralism is crucial for maintaining global economic stability and ensuring that the benefits of development are shared by all nations.

The BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting convened to discuss strategies for deepening cooperation among member states and strengthening their collective voice on major international issues.
