Wang Yi Urges Collaboration and Exchanges to Strengthen China-Jamaica Friendship

Kingston, The Gulf Observer: Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi expressed China’s commitment to enhancing the alignment of development strategies with Jamaica, fostering cooperation across diverse sectors, and sustaining robust people-to-people and cultural exchanges to bolster the foundation of friendship between the two nations. Wang made these statements during a meeting with Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness in Kingston on Saturday.

Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, emphasized the importance of consolidating the strategic partnership between China and Jamaica. Prime Minister Holness acknowledged China’s support for Jamaica’s economic development and efforts to improve the well-being of its citizens.

Reaffirming Jamaica’s adherence to the one-China policy, Holness expressed the country’s dedication to prioritizing bilateral relations. He aspired to build a robust Jamaica-China strategic partnership and appreciated China’s consistent support, emphasizing Jamaica’s friendly policies, commitment to the one-China principle, and endorsement of China’s core interests.

Wang commended Jamaica for pursuing friendly policies towards China and respecting its sovereignty and independence. He emphasized China’s advocacy for equality among nations, respecting Jamaica’s unique characteristics in choosing its system, and supporting the country in safeguarding its sovereignty, independence, and national dignity.

Acknowledging the fruitful outcomes of the Belt and Road cooperation, Wang called for expanded collaboration in economic and trade investment, new energy, agriculture, digital economy, and the blue economy.

Prime Minister Holness expressed Jamaica’s eagerness to draw from China’s successful experiences for more efficient and equitable development. He conveyed confidence in China’s continued leadership in addressing global challenges and sought ongoing support, particularly in enhancing the resilience of small island countries to climate change.

During the discussions, both sides also explored avenues to deepen China-Caribbean cooperation. In a parallel meeting, Wang held talks with Jamaica’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Kamina Johnson-Smith, further strengthening diplomatic ties between the two nations.
