Former NPC Standing Committee Chairman Wu Bangguo Passes Away at 84

Beijing, The Gulf Observer: Wu Bangguo, former chairman of the National People’s Congress (NPC) Standing Committee and a distinguished leader of the Communist Party of China (CPC), passed away on Tuesday in Beijing at the age of 84 due to illness, according to an official statement.
Wu held numerous key positions during his political career, including member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and vice premier of the State Council. He served as chairman of the NPC Standing Committee during the 10th and 11th sessions, playing a pivotal role in the development of China’s socialist democracy and legal system.
An obituary issued jointly by the CPC Central Committee, the NPC Standing Committee, the State Council, and the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference praised Wu as an excellent Party member, a loyal communist soldier, and an outstanding statesman and revolutionary.
Born in July 1941 in Feidong, Anhui Province, Wu graduated from Tsinghua University and joined the CPC in 1964. His early career in Shanghai saw him rise through the ranks, managing companies in the electronics industry and later serving as deputy Party secretary in telecommunications. Wu was instrumental in implementing reforms during China’s opening-up period, particularly in the development of Pudong.
From 2003 to 2013, as chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, Wu oversaw significant reforms in state-owned enterprises and infrastructure, while advancing socialist democracy and the rule of law in China. His contributions to the Three Gorges project and China’s economic expansion were highly lauded.
Wu retired from his leadership roles in 2013 but continued to support the Party’s cause, remaining a staunch advocate of the leadership under Xi Jinping. His passing is recognized as a profound loss to the Party and the nation.
The obituary concluded with a tribute: “Eternal glory to Comrade Wu Bangguo.”
