Erdogan Reaffirms Türkiye’s Commitment to UN Reforms and Global Peace Efforts
Kazan, The Gulf Observer: President Recep Tayyip Erdogan reiterated Türkiye’s readiness to support efforts aimed at transforming the United Nations (UN) into a renewed beacon of hope for humanity. In his message commemorating the 79th anniversary of the UN, Erdogan emphasized Türkiye’s dedication to multilateralism and expressed the country’s commitment to reinforcing the UN’s role in promoting justice, equality, and solidarity across the globe.
“Türkiye is ready to support all efforts to ensure that the UN, which it considers the cornerstone of multilateralism, once again becomes a beacon of hope for humanity and that the international system is structured effectively based on principles of justice, equality, and solidarity, free from double standards,” Erdogan stated.
Highlighting Türkiye’s active participation in UN initiatives, the President reaffirmed Ankara’s determination to contribute concretely to UN activities, including mediation, conflict prevention, peacekeeping, counter-terrorism, migration management, sustainability, and environmental protection. He also pointed to initiatives like the Alliance of Civilisations as key areas where Türkiye would continue its support.
Erdogan noted the increasing presence of UN offices in Türkiye, particularly in Istanbul, as a “concrete manifestation” of the country’s deepening cooperation with the global organization.
However, the President expressed disappointment with the UN Security Council’s failure to prevent the worsening situation in Gaza, criticizing its inaction. “The Security Council is emboldening the perpetrators with its stance and undermining faith in the rules-based international system,” Erdogan said, emphasizing the Council’s responsibility to act decisively in line with international law before the crisis in the Middle East escalates further.
As the UN marks its anniversary, Erdogan remarked that the organization faces unprecedented challenges, including the loss of personnel in conflict zones like Gaza, ongoing attacks on peacekeeping missions, and the labeling of the Secretary-General as “unwanted.” He underscored the increasing duties and responsibilities of the UN in light of global conflicts, rising poverty, and the spread of Islamophobia and racism.
“The proper fulfillment of this responsibility can only be achieved by ensuring the appropriate conditions for all of the UN core organs, including the Security Council, to effectively carry out their functions,” Erdogan concluded.
President Erdogan ended his message by honoring the memory of UN personnel who lost their lives while serving in conflict zones and reaffirmed Türkiye’s commitment to a fair and just international order.
