ADNOC Signs Landmark Long-Term Agreement with SEFE for Lower-Carbon LNG Supply

ADNOC

Abu Dhabi, The Gulf Observer: ADNOC today announced at the Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference (ADIPEC) the signing of the first long-term Sales and Purchase Agreement (SPA) for its lower-carbon Ruwais liquefied natural gas (LNG) project, currently under development in Al Ruwais Industrial City. This historic 15-year, 1 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) agreement with SEFE Marketing and Trading Singapore Pte Ltd., a subsidiary of Germany’s SEFE Securing Energy for Europe GmbH, reinforces ADNOC’s commitment to supporting global energy needs with lower-carbon solutions.

The SPA formalizes the Heads of Agreement initially signed in March, marking a new phase in ADNOC and SEFE’s collaboration. Under the agreement, the LNG will be sourced from ADNOC’s Ruwais LNG project, with commercial deliveries set to begin in 2028. This project aligns with ADNOC’s strategy to advance energy transition by ensuring sustainable, lower-carbon energy supplies.

Fatema Al Nuaimi, Executive Vice President, Downstream Business Management at ADNOC, expressed the significance of the deal: “Natural gas accounts for over a quarter of Germany’s energy supply, and we are very pleased to support the country’s energy security through this landmark agreement with SEFE for the lower-carbon Ruwais LNG project. As natural gas demand continues to increase, ADNOC is ensuring greater access to lower-carbon gas to power homes, fuel industries, and keep people connected. We will continue to reinforce our role as a reliable global supplier of natural gas.”

This agreement builds upon the UAE-Germany Energy Security and Industry Accelerator (ESIA), signed in 2022 to foster collaboration on energy security, decarbonization, and lower-carbon fuels. The Ruwais LNG plant, set to become the first LNG export facility in the Middle East and Africa to run on clean power, will be one of the lowest-carbon-intensity LNG plants worldwide, underscoring ADNOC’s dedication to sustainable energy solutions.

Dr. Egbert Laege, CEO of SEFE, highlighted the partnership’s role in enhancing energy resilience for Europe: “This partnership with ADNOC supports our efforts to responsibly diversify our energy sources, enhance security of energy supply for Germany and Europe, and support our customers on their decarbonization journey. Furthermore, it is an important step for SEFE’s ambition to drive the energy transition and become a European energy major in the low-carbon economy.”

To date, ADNOC has secured over 7 mtpa of long-term commitments for Ruwais LNG’s production capacity, positioning the project as a central pillar in ADNOC’s broader strategy to deliver cleaner energy on a global scale.
