UAE Delegation Advocates for Climate Action at COP29 in Baku
Baku, The Gulf Observer: During the Climate, Peace, Relief, Recovery (CPRR) Day at the 29th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs actively participated in key engagements to advance global climate action.
The UAE delegation’s efforts underscored its commitment to reinforcing the legacy of COP28, which was the first COP to dedicate a thematic day to CPRR. Highlighting this leadership, the UAE launched the COP28 Declaration on Climate, Relief, Recovery and Peace, which has already garnered support from 94 countries and 43 organizations.
The Baku Call and Hub Announced
At a High-Level Ministerial event hosted by Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov, Abdulla Balalaa, UAE Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Energy and Sustainability, announced the Baku Call, COP29’s declaration promoting Climate Action for Peace, Relief, and Recovery, and the Baku Hub as its mechanism for implementation.
Balalaa emphasized that these initiatives represent significant progress in enabling climate action for vulnerable nations, building upon COP28 outcomes and prior agreements. He also drew attention to the disparity in access to financial resources, stressing the need for equitable solutions to bridge the gap for nations in dire need.
UAE Engagements at CPRR Day
The UAE delegation also participated in a panel hosted by the Anwar Gargash Diplomatic Academy (AGDA) at the UAE Pavilion. Discussions focused on:
- Accelerating climate action amid challenges of peace and security.
- Showcasing progress since COP28.
- Outlining the roadmap to COP30.
