President Prabowo Urges D-8 to Pursue Greater Unity and Global Equity

Cairo, The Gulf Observer: Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has called on the Developing Eight (D-8) to expand its role beyond an economic bloc to address broader development challenges and ensure prosperity for all member nations. His remarks were made during the opening session of the 11th D-8 Summit, held in Egypt’s New Administrative Capital, Cairo, on Thursday.

President Prabowo highlighted the importance of the D-8 as a platform for the Global South to advocate for equality and justice in the international system. “We must continue to advocate for a more equitable global order based on international law, inclusiveness, justice, and shared prosperity,” he stated.

Stressing the significance of unity, Prabowo urged member states to prioritize cooperation as representatives of the Global South. He called on members to set aside differences and work towards a unified vision for mutual prosperity.

“We must leave our differences behind. We must seek the greater good for our people. Without unity, without integration, we will be weak. And if we are weak, we will be exploited. That is the law of history,” Prabowo asserted.

Indonesia reaffirmed its dedication to supporting D-8’s objectives and fostering collaboration among its member countries.

The 11th D-8 Summit, themed “Investing in Youth and Supporting Small and Medium Enterprises: Shaping Tomorrow’s Economy,” emphasized the pivotal role of youth and small enterprises in driving future economic growth.

Established in 1997, the D-8 Organization for Economic Cooperation consists of eight key members from the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC): Bangladesh, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Egypt, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Turkey. The organization aims to enhance the global standing of its members, create diverse trade opportunities, amplify participation in international decision-making, and improve living standards.

President Prabowo’s appeal underscores Indonesia’s commitment to fostering unity and advocating for equitable progress among D-8 member states, aligning with the broader aspirations of the Global South.
