Sheki, The Gulf Observer: Vice-President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, Leyla Aliyeva, on June 30 visited the Muhammad Fuzuli Culture and Recreation Park in Sheki to review plans for its restoration and reconstruction, as part of efforts to preserve and revitalize one of the city’s historic cultural landmarks.

During the visit, Leyla Aliyeva was briefed on the proposed renovation project for the park, which was established in 1951 and is set to undergo extensive restoration works aimed at preserving its historical and cultural significance.

A central component of the project is the restoration of the park’s iconic 1,800-seat Summer Theatre, once regarded as one of Sheki’s most prominent cultural and recreational venues. The theatre hosted performances by some of Azerbaijan’s most celebrated artists between 1975 and 1980, including legendary singer Rashid Behbudov, People’s Artist Zeynab Khanlarova, and the Azerbaijan State Symphony Orchestra conducted by the distinguished maestro Niyazi.

In subsequent years, the venue also welcomed acclaimed theatrical productions featuring renowned actors Nasiba Zeynalova and Hajibaba Baghirov, alongside concerts by leading mugham and folk performers, including Alibaba Mammadov, Sakhavat Mammadov and Melek Khanim Ayyubova.

As part of the initial conservation efforts, the bust of the renowned Azerbaijani poet Muhammad Fuzuli was carefully removed for restoration before being returned to its original location within the park.

The comprehensive restoration project aims to preserve the park’s original frescoes, fully rehabilitate the historic Summer Theatre, and showcase works by local sculptors. Upon completion, the initiative is expected to restore the park’s role as a vibrant cultural destination and modern family recreation space while preserving its rich artistic heritage for future generations.
