Jakarta, The Gulf Observer: Indonesia has conveyed its condolences to the government and people of Norway following the passing of King Harald V on August 28.

Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono expressed the condolences on behalf of the Indonesian government and people by signing the condolence book at the Norwegian Embassy in Jakarta on September 1.

“On behalf of the government and the people of the Republic of Indonesia, as well as on my behalf, I extend my deepest sympathy and heartfelt condolences to the Kingdom of Norway and its people on the passing of His Majesty King Harald V,” Sugiono said in his condolence message.

The foreign minister said King Harald V would be remembered and honored for his leadership, warmth, dedication and humility, adding that his legacy would continue to inspire future generations.

Sugiono’s visit to the Norwegian Embassy reflected Indonesia’s respect for the late monarch and underscored the longstanding friendly relations between Indonesia and Norway. He was received at the embassy by Norway’s Deputy Ambassador to Indonesia Christian Groseth.

King Harald V died on August 28 at the age of 89 after receiving medical treatment at the National Hospital in Oslo, where he had been hospitalized since August 17, according to the Royal Palace.

The palace said the monarch had been receiving cortisone treatment for hemolytic anemia, a blood disorder that had resulted in fluid accumulation in his body. His condition subsequently deteriorated after he developed a bacterial infection in his bloodstream, according to Norwegian public broadcaster NRK.

Following his death, Crown Prince Haakon succeeded his father as Norway’s monarch in accordance with the country’s constitutional provisions and assumed the regnal name Haakon VIII.

On September 1, King Haakon VIII formally took his oath of allegiance to the Constitution of Norway during a ceremony at the Norwegian Parliament.
