Vietnam Calls on UN Security Council to Address Cyberspace Challenges
New York, The Gulf Observer: Vietnam has urged the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to devote more attention and resources to addressing challenges related to cyberspace and cybersecurity. This call emphasizes the critical role of the UNSC in maintaining international peace and security, particularly in the context of preventing conflicts, combating terrorism, and protecting essential infrastructure.
Speaking at the high-level debate on “Maintenance of International Peace and Security: Addressing Evolving Threats in Cyberspace,” held by the UNSC on June 20 in New York, Ambassador Đặng Hoàng Giang, Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the UN, highlighted the increasing scale and complexity of threats in cyberspace. These threats, he noted, pose significant risks of escalating geopolitical tensions and directly impact all countries, with developing nations being the most vulnerable due to their limited cybersecurity capacities.
Ambassador Giang emphasized the need for multi-dimensional approaches and cohesive solutions to tackle these threats. He pointed out that the UN has a pivotal role in enhancing and refining international frameworks through initiatives such as the Global Digital Compact and the Convention on Cyber Crime. Additionally, he called for enhanced cooperation to improve cyber defense capabilities and bridge the information technology gap among nations.
Vietnam, the ambassador said, has been proactive in addressing cybersecurity threats with the adoption of its Law on Cyber Security in 2018. The country advocates for and actively participates in international cooperation on cybersecurity, grounded in principles of respecting national independence and sovereignty, non-interference in internal affairs, and shared responsibility in promoting responsible behavior in cyberspace.
The debate, chaired by South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul, saw participants expressing deep concern about global cybersecurity issues. Proposed solutions included bolstering multilateral cooperation, strengthening the international legal framework, and enhancing the role of the UN Security Council in addressing these challenges.
The discussions underscored the necessity of a unified global response to cybersecurity threats, highlighting the UNSC’s crucial role in fostering international cooperation and ensuring a secure cyberspace for all nations.
