Abu Dhabi Department of Health Mandates Genetic Testing for Emirati Premarital Screenings Starting 2025
Abu Dhabi, The Gulf Observer: In a landmark move, the Abu Dhabi Department of Health announced that genetic testing will become a mandatory component of premarital screenings for all Emirati citizens beginning January 2025. The new measure was unveiled by Dr. Noura Al Ghaithi, Undersecretary of the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, during a keynote session on the Emirati Genome Programme at the UAE Government Annual Meetings 2024.
The Emirates Genome Council confirmed the policy, which will encompass testing for 570 genes associated with over 840 genetic disorders, aiming to reduce hereditary disease incidence among Emiratis. This proactive step enables couples to identify shared genetic mutations that could potentially impact their children with preventable genetic conditions, including vision and hearing loss, blood clotting disorders, developmental issues, organ failure, hormonal imbalances, and severe seizures.
Dr. Al Ghaithi underscored the significance of this initiative in preserving public health, noting that it empowers couples to make informed family planning decisions. “Genetic testing contributes to the well-being of future generations and enables early intervention through genetic counseling, tailored reproductive solutions, and personalized healthcare recommendations,” she said. Test results will be available within approximately 14 days, providing timely insights for couples planning marriage.
The Emirati Genome Programme has led to notable genetic discoveries, including identifying that over 25% of Emiratis have genes linked to resilience against psychological stress, while 46% possess genetic traits aiding lactose digestion. Moreover, 20% of future generations may face an elevated risk of Type 1 diabetes. These findings allow for targeted health recommendations to participants, promoting informed decision-making.
The Emirati Genome Programme, overseen by the Emirates Genome Council under the leadership of H.H. Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, is part of the UAE’s ambitious vision to become a global leader in genomics research and innovation. The program, which aims to collect one million genetic samples, is one of the largest population genomics initiatives worldwide, and serves as a foundation for reducing genetic disorders and enhancing healthcare outcomes across the nation.
