London, The Gulf Observer: The Sarawak Museum Department has entered a historic partnership with the British Museum, with a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed on Wednesday (Nov 6) in London. This agreement marks a significant milestone in Sarawak Museum’s pursuit of global recognition as a premier institution in history and heritage.

The MOU was signed by Sarawak Museum Department Director Nancy Jolhi and British Museum Director Nicholas Cullinan, witnessed by Sarawak’s Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Deputy Minister Datuk Sebastian Ting, and Permanent Secretary Datuk Sherrina Hussaini.

In a statement released on Thursday (Nov 7), the Sarawak Museum Department highlighted the MOU as a pivotal step towards strengthening international ties. “This agreement paves the way for enhanced collaboration between both institutions, underscoring the Sarawak Museum Department’s commitment to building international partnerships that highlight the unique history and heritage of Sarawak,” the department stated.

The partnership focuses on the study of Borneo and Sarawak artefacts housed in British institutions and in Sarawak itself. Through joint research projects, exhibitions, and cultural exchanges, the collaboration will deepen museological expertise and broaden public understanding of Borneo’s rich history.

The Sarawak Museum Department emphasized that partnering with the internationally-renowned British Museum supports its strategic vision of becoming a globally engaged center of history and heritage by 2030.
