Bulgaria Set to Adopt Euro by January 2026, Finance Minister Petkova Confirms at Franco-German Business Forum

Sofia, The Gulf Observer: During the conference “Introduction of the Euro in Bulgaria – Effects and Practical Aspects for Business”, Finance Minister Temenuzhka Petkova affirmed that Bulgaria is fully prepared to adopt the euro as its official currency starting January 1, 2026. The event was organized by the Franco-Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the German-Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and hosted at the French Cultural Institute in Sofia.
Minister Petkova addressed representatives of the Franco-German business community, underscoring that Bulgaria stands on the verge of a major strategic milestone—full eurozone membership. She emphasized that, after years of determined reform and perseverance, Bulgaria has met all four Maastricht convergence criteria as of February 2025, paving the way for the country to request an extraordinary convergence report from the European Central Bank (ECB) and the European Commission. The findings of these institutions are expected on June 4.
Expressing her confidence in a favorable outcome, Petkova stressed that all prerequisites for euro adoption are firmly in place. She extended her gratitude to the Ambassadors of France and Germany, Joël Meyer and Irene Maria Plank, as well as to the finance ministers of both countries, for their steadfast support throughout Bulgaria’s journey toward eurozone accession.
Minister Petkova also noted that Bulgaria’s current public debate over euro adoption echoes earlier discussions seen in France and Germany prior to the euro’s launch. Acknowledging that the national discourse has reached a critical moment, she reassured attendees that the Bulgarian government remains committed and fully prepared for the changeover.
In her remarks, Petkova highlighted the legislative progress made, including the enactment of a comprehensive Euro Adoption Act and the ongoing revision of sector-specific regulations. She urged businesses and citizens alike to consult the official information portal evroto.bg, which provides in-depth guidance on the transition process.
She further emphasized the significance of technical readiness, announcing that by September 30, 2025, all government information systems will be capable of operating in euros. Petkova commended the coordination between the Bulgarian government, the Bulgarian National Bank, and the Association of Bulgarian Banks, assuring the audience that the financial sector is fully prepared for the transition.
Acknowledging public concerns, Petkova addressed the need to tackle misinformation and build trust. She noted the government’s ongoing public awareness campaign, which is expected to intensify following the anticipated positive assessment from the ECB and the European Commission in June.
In conclusion, Minister Petkova expressed optimism, citing recent public opinion polls showing growing support for euro adoption. “We are ready,” she declared, reaffirming Bulgaria’s determination to officially join the eurozone on January 1, 2026.
