China Releases Guidelines for Labeling AI-Generated Internet Content

Beijing, The Gulf Observer: China has issued a comprehensive set of guidelines on labeling internet content that is generated or composed using artificial intelligence (AI) technology, set to take effect on September 1, 2025. The guidelines were released by key authorities, including the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC), with the primary goal of promoting the healthy development of the AI sector and assisting internet users in identifying false or misleading information.

With the rapid development of AI technology in recent years, a significant volume of online content has been produced through AI assistance and subsequently disseminated in cyberspace. However, the abuse of AI technology and the distribution of fake information have raised social concerns, prompting authorities to establish standards for content identification.

One notable incident involved AI-generated images of a famous Chinese actor, which were used to defraud members of his fan base last year, sparking widespread discussions on improving regulation within the sector.

In response, the new guidelines mandate the labeling of AI-generated online content at every stage of production and dissemination, ensuring that visible marks are added in appropriate locations. Furthermore, the guidelines strictly prohibit any organization or individual from deleting, tampering with, fabricating, or concealing such identifying labels, according to the CAC.

The implementation of these guidelines marks a proactive step toward ensuring transparency and accountability in the rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence, while safeguarding public trust in digital content.
