Indonesia Shares AI Readiness Experience at UNESCO Global Forum in Bangkok

Jakarta, The Gulf Observer: Indonesia shared its national experience with the Artificial Intelligence Readiness Assessment Methodology (AI-RAM) at the 3rd UNESCO Global Forum on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence, held on Wednesday in Bangkok.
Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Nezar Patria represented Indonesia at a high-level session titled “From Readiness Assessment to Enhanced Institutional, Technical, and Human Capacities on AI.” He presented key findings from Indonesia’s national AI-RAM assessment, highlighting its role in shaping a comprehensive understanding of the country’s AI development.
“AI-RAM has helped us comprehensively assess the status of our AI development across multiple dimensions — legal, social, scientific, economic, and technological,” Patria stated. He emphasized that the methodology fostered a shared understanding of national needs through a series of inclusive, multi-stakeholder workshops held in Jakarta, Aceh, Balikpapan, and Makassar.
While the assessment focuses on technological readiness, Patria underscored the importance of aligning AI development with Indonesia’s broader strategic goals, particularly in achieving digital technology sovereignty. “The most significant step forward is to complement this by evaluating our readiness for digital technology sovereignty — a deeper and more critical strategic assessment for our future in the global digital landscape,” he said.
Indonesia also stressed the significance of ethical AI governance, calling for robust AI ethics education, active public engagement, and the development of sector-specific policies in key areas such as healthcare, education, and bureaucratic reform.
During the session, Indonesia advocated for enhanced regional cooperation among Global South countries, grounded in shared ethical values and knowledge exchange. It also called for the integration of ethical impact assessments into all multilateral AI initiatives to ensure inclusive and responsible technological progress.
This year’s UNESCO Forum centered on strengthening international collaboration to ensure that the evolution of artificial intelligence supports human rights, social justice, and sustainable development.
“Indonesia remains committed to playing a strategic role in the global AI ecosystem, particularly for Global South countries,” Patria concluded.
