Indonesian Foreign Minister Calls for Urgent Global Governance Reform at UN Summit

New York, The Gulf Observer: Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi has called for immediate global governance reforms to tackle critical challenges during her address at the “Summit of the Future,” part of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly in New York.

In her speech on Monday, Marsudi underscored the pressing need for collaboration in addressing the world’s most urgent issues, including geopolitical tensions, slow economic recovery, and the mounting climate and energy crises. She pointed out the declining trust in multilateral institutions, stating, “Trust in multilateralism is fading, and its effectiveness continues to be questioned.”

Marsudi stressed the need for an inclusive, adaptive, and effective global order. She called for reforms to both the UN Security Council and international financial systems, highlighting that the voices and concerns of developing countries must be heard and addressed. “We cannot afford to wait any longer. We must push for a true and real reform,” she said.

The foreign minister’s remarks also focused on two critical points. First, she emphasized the need for lasting peace, particularly concerning the Palestinian issue, calling for an end to the violence. “The ongoing genocide by Israel must be stopped immediately,” she stated.

Secondly, Marsudi advocated for the protection of every nation’s right to development. She argued that all countries, including those in the Global South, must be free from trade discrimination and debt traps. “If this is not achieved, some countries will inevitably be left behind,” she warned.

The summit, themed “Multilateral Solutions for a Better Tomorrow,” provided a platform for global leaders to reflect on the future of multilateral cooperation. Marsudi concluded by urging the international community to use this summit as a turning point to create a sustainable and equitable future for all.
