Commemorative Event Held to Mark 83rd Anniversary of Ležáky Tragedy

Prague, The Gulf Observer: A solemn commemorative ceremony marking the 83rd anniversary of the destruction of the village of Ležáky was held on Sunday in the Chrudim region, continuing the tradition of remembrance without political speeches.

The village of Ležáky was razed by Nazi forces on June 24, 1942, in retaliation for the assassination of acting Reich Protector Reinhard Heydrich. The massacre occurred just two weeks after the infamous destruction of Lidice, marking another tragic chapter in the brutal reprisals carried out by the Nazi regime during World War II.

Eduard Stehlík, Director of the Lidice Memorial, emphasized the appropriateness of maintaining silence during such commemorations. “Silence befits such events,” he stated, reflecting the somber atmosphere and deep respect paid to the memory of the victims.

The annual event serves not only as a remembrance of the atrocities committed but also as a reminder of the resilience of historical memory and the enduring commitment to peace and human dignity.
