Iran, Russia Discuss Bilateral Cooperation and Multilateral Coordination in Moscow

Moscow, The Gulf Observer: Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Kazem Gharibabadi held a meeting with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Vershinin in Moscow on Monday to discuss a range of issues, including bilateral relations and multilateral cooperation.

The talks took place at the Russian Foreign Ministry headquarters ahead of the meeting of the Group of Friends in Defense of the Charter of the United Nations, which Gharibabadi is attending during his official visit to the Russian capital. Iran’s Ambassador to Moscow, Kazem Jalali, was also present during the meeting.

Both sides reviewed the latest developments in Iran–Russia relations and explored avenues to deepen coordination between Tehran and Moscow in international forums. They underlined the importance of bolstering cooperation through multilateral mechanisms, particularly within the framework of the United Nations and other global institutions.

The two diplomats also exchanged views on pressing international issues, highlighting the achievements of multilateralism and joint efforts to counter unilateral approaches in global governance. They reaffirmed their shared commitment to promoting international peace and security and strengthening legal and institutional mechanisms for global cooperation.

The discussions were held in the context of the Group of Friends in Defense of the Charter of the United Nations, which was established in New York in July 2021. Comprising 18 member states—including Algeria, China, Cuba, Iran, Russia, and Venezuela—the group aims to uphold the principles and objectives enshrined in the UN Charter, including the promotion of peace, economic development, human rights, and the right to self-determination.

Both Gharibabadi and Vershinin emphasized the importance of the group’s continued efforts to support multilateralism and resist actions that undermine the international legal order.

The meeting underscored the growing alignment between Iran and Russia on key international issues and highlighted their shared interest in reinforcing diplomatic engagement through principled dialogue and collective action.
