Baku, The Gulf Observer: President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, on May 12 received Meg O’Neill, Chief Executive Officer of bp, in Baku to discuss the continued development of strategic energy cooperation between Azerbaijan and the global energy company.

President Ilham Aliyev congratulated Meg O’Neill on her appointment as CEO of bp and expressed confidence that the long-standing successful partnership between SOCAR and bp would continue to strengthen under her leadership.

The Azerbaijani President praised the unique history of cooperation between Azerbaijan and bp spanning more than three decades, emphasizing that revenues generated from joint projects during this period had played a significant role in the country’s socio-economic development.

President Aliyev noted that the number of joint projects implemented by Azerbaijan and bp continues to grow, describing this as a reflection of the mutually beneficial and strategic nature of the partnership.

Meg O’Neill thanked the President for the congratulations and said she was honored to visit Baku. She highlighted the visionary leadership of National Leader Heydar Aliyev and President Ilham Aliyev in ensuring that oil and gas revenues were effectively utilized for the development of the country.

The bp CEO also referred to the transformation and modernization of Baku, including significant investments in infrastructure and road development.

During the meeting, President Ilham Aliyev observed that in some countries oil and gas revenues contribute to social inequality, whereas in Azerbaijan they have been directed toward national development and improving living standards.

Recalling the signing of the historic “Contract of the Century” shortly after Azerbaijan restored its independence, the President said the country had faced severe economic and humanitarian challenges following the First Garabagh War, including territorial losses and a near-collapse of the state budget.

President Aliyev stated that attracting major international energy companies and securing foreign investment had been crucial for the country’s recovery and development, expressing gratitude to bp for the confidence it demonstrated in Azerbaijan during that critical period.

The discussions also covered bp’s ongoing energy projects in Azerbaijan, including renewable energy initiatives and projects being implemented in the liberated territories.

Both sides further highlighted Azerbaijan’s important role in strengthening Europe’s energy security and exchanged views on future prospects for cooperation between SOCAR and bp across the energy sector.
