President To Lam Emphasizes Potential to Deepen Vietnam-US Partnership
New York, The Gulf Observer: Party General Secretary and State President To Lam reaffirmed the significant potential to deepen ties between Vietnam and the United States, one year after the two countries elevated their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Speaking at an event in New York on Sunday evening (local time), President To Lam highlighted the partnership’s potential to benefit the peoples of both nations and contribute to peace, stability, and prosperity in the region and globally.
The event, held to mark the first anniversary of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for Peace, Cooperation, and Sustainable Development, also commemorated the upcoming 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and the United States. Attendees included former US Secretary of State John Kerry, Senator Dan Sullivan, senior US government officials, and members of the Vietnamese community in the United States.
Reflecting on the long history of US-Vietnam relations, President Tô Lâm described the partnership as a rare and exemplary model in international diplomacy. He noted how the two countries, once adversaries during the war, have successfully built a strong and trusted partnership. From their first interactions over two centuries ago, through overcoming numerous challenges, the relationship has steadily evolved—achieving a Comprehensive Partnership in 2013 and, after a decade of cooperation, advancing to the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2023.
President Tô Lâm stressed that this milestone is the result of decades of efforts to build mutual trust, driven by leaders, governments, legislatures, and citizens from both nations. As the 30th anniversary of US-Vietnam diplomatic relations approaches in 2025, he urged both countries to continue collaborating closely to fully implement the 2023 US-Vietnam Joint Declaration.
Looking forward, the Vietnamese leader emphasized the importance of expanding high-level exchanges, enhancing cooperation in advanced fields such as semiconductors and artificial intelligence, and focusing on high-quality human resource development. He also reiterated the importance of addressing the legacy of war to further build trust and promote peace and stability.
Quoting US President Abraham Lincoln, Tô Lâm said, “The best way to predict the future is to create it.” He highlighted the efforts of both nations over the past 30 years to create a model for international relations based on reconciliation, cooperation, and shared opportunities for development.
Expressing gratitude for the US Government’s support during a recent typhoon, President Tô Lâm also called for continued collaboration in addressing mutual concerns and advancing peace and prosperity on a global scale.
Former US Secretary of State John Kerry, who played a pivotal role in normalizing relations between the two countries, reflected on the progress made in overcoming challenges and fostering cooperation. Senator Dan Sullivan offered condolences to the victims of Typhoon Yagi and emphasized the bipartisan support for the Vietnam-US Comprehensive Strategic Partnership within the US Congress, noting its positive impact on regional and global stability.
As the partnership continues to strengthen, both sides are poised to build on their shared history and forge new paths for cooperation, contributing to a more stable and prosperous world.
