Regional Conference on Water Management Convenes in Ashgabat on Earth Defense Day
Ashgabat, The Gulf Observer: A regional conference focusing on water management issues in Central Asia was convened in Ashgabat, commemorating Earth Defense Day and advancing the agenda of sustainable water resource management in the region. The event, organized as part of the implementation of the Regional Project on Water Resources and Environment (WAVE), drew participation from key stakeholders across Central Asia and international delegates, as reported by TDH.
Representatives from the water industry, ministries, departments, and research organizations of Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan were in attendance, alongside delegates from international bodies. The conference provided a platform for a comprehensive dialogue on pressing water-related challenges and strategies for sustainable development.
The agenda encompassed a wide array of topics, including an in-depth analysis of ongoing reforms in the water sector of Central Asian countries, strategies for sectoral development, and experiences in implementing regional projects facilitated by organizations such as USAID, GIZ, and UNDP. Discussions also centered on the UN General Assembly Resolution titled “Cooperation between the UN and the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea,” championed by Turkmenistan and co-authored by 19 countries, underscoring its significance in advancing international cooperation on water resource management in the region.
Turkmenistan’s proactive role in advocating for transboundary water cooperation and sustainable development goals was highlighted, with participants commending the country’s initiatives at major international forums and regional summits. Emphasis was placed on the importance of utilizing transboundary water resources in accordance with international law and fostering mutual respect among nations.
Recognizing the pivotal role of water resources in achieving sustainable development, participants reaffirmed their commitment to prioritizing water issues at both national and regional levels. The conference concluded with a consensus on the imperative of strengthening multilateral cooperation to address water-related challenges and promote peace, stability, and prosperity in the region.
In a hybrid format, the conference also hosted the 3rd Regional Decision Making Meeting in the Amu Darya Basin, providing an opportunity to discuss outcomes and opportunities for collaborative action. Additionally, the 6th meeting of the Regional Coordination Committee took place within the framework of the event, furthering efforts towards coordinated water resource management in Central Asia.
The conference served as a significant step forward in fostering collaboration and collective action to address water management challenges, reflecting the shared commitment of Central Asian nations and international partners to safeguarding water resources for future generations.
