Russia Calls for Stronger Legal Framework in Energy Cooperation with Sri Lanka

Colombo, The Gulf Observer: Visiting Russian Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Andrey Rudenko has emphasized the need for Sri Lanka and Russia to develop energy cooperation on a solid legal and economic foundation, rather than limiting engagements due to external pressures.
Speaking during an interactive discussion organized by the Pathfinder Foundation with representatives of Sri Lankan media and think tanks, Rudenko highlighted the importance of strengthening bilateral understanding and collaboration.
He noted that Sri Lanka remains an attractive destination for Russian tourists and suggested that tourism could pave the way for broader economic engagement, including trade and technological investment. However, he stressed that deeper cooperation requires enhanced mutual understanding and a stable regulatory framework.
Rudenko further stated that energy cooperation should not be restricted, particularly in light of policies adopted by the United States, but instead be structured through long-term agreements that ensure sustainability and mutual benefit.
Responding to queries regarding Sri Lanka’s request for Russian oil, he said that such requests are currently under consideration. He added that Russia’s ability to meet these demands depends on available resources and the possibility of establishing long-term contracts, which would significantly improve the situation.
The Deputy Minister also indicated that discussions on bilateral issues are ongoing, expressing optimism that recent engagements, including the visit of Russian Deputy Energy Minister Roman Marshavin, would lead to tangible progress in energy cooperation.
He concluded by underlining the broader geopolitical context, noting that the resolution of ongoing conflicts would contribute positively to global stability and facilitate smoother international energy cooperation.
