Sri Lanka Eye Donation Society Marks 65 Years of Service, Donates Over 100,000 Corneas Worldwide

Colombo, The Gulf Observer: The Sri Lanka Eye Donation Society has commemorated 65 years of dedicated service, marking a significant milestone in its mission to restore sight and support medical care both locally and internationally.
Speaking to the media, Ayodya Sampath De Silva of the society stated that the Eye Bank has provided a total of 101,483 corneas for transplantation to countries including Egypt, Iran, Lebanon, and Pakistan. Domestically, the society has donated 65,546 corneas, while its Tissue Bank has supplied 19,887 tissues for various medical applications.
Looking ahead to 2026, the society announced plans to further expand its community outreach and healthcare initiatives. These include conducting 1,750 free cataract surgeries and distributing 30,000 free reading and near-vision spectacles through 100 community programs across the country.
The society reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing eye care services and strengthening its role as a leading contributor to vision restoration and medical assistance worldwide.
