Türkiye Offers Support for Resolving Rwanda-DRC Dispute, Highlights Bilateral Cooperation

Ankara, The Gulf Observer: Türkiye stands ready to assist in resolving the ongoing dispute between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced during a joint news conference with Rwandan President Paul Kagame in Ankara on Thursday.

“We, as Türkiye, are ready to provide any support necessary to resolve this issue, which will contribute to stability and peace in the Great Lakes Region, should both parties wish for it,” President Erdogan stated.

The dispute between Rwanda and the DRC has escalated following the resurgence of the M23 rebel group, which has waged an insurgency in eastern Congo since 2022. Kinshasa and other parties accuse Rwanda of supporting the rebels, an allegation Kigali denies. President Erdogan’s offer reflects Türkiye’s commitment to promoting peace and stability in the region through dialogue and collaboration.

President Erdogan also commended Rwanda for its efforts in combating the FETO terrorist organization, which Türkiye holds responsible for the failed coup attempt on July 15, 2016. The coup attempt claimed 252 lives and left 2,734 wounded.

“Rwanda’s strong stance against FETO is appreciated and underscores our growing partnership in combating terrorism,” Erdogan remarked. Türkiye accuses FETO of orchestrating a long-running campaign to undermine the state by infiltrating critical institutions, including the military, police, and judiciary.

The visit by President Kagame and the discussions between the two leaders mark a deepening of ties between Türkiye and Rwanda, emphasizing shared commitments to regional stability, counterterrorism, and bilateral cooperation.
