Turkmenistan agrees to provide Afghanistan with up to 1.8 Billion kW of electricity

Ashgabat, The Gulf Observer: The Minister of Energy of Turkmenistan, Annageldi Saparov, held discussions with the leadership of the State Power Corporation Turkmenenergo alongside Alhaj Mullah Muhammad Hanif Hamza, the Chief Executive Officer of Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS), and his accompanying delegation during their two-day official visit to Turkmenistan. This diplomatic engagement culminated in the signing of a substantive contract between the parties, outlining the provisions for electricity supply from Turkmenistan to Afghanistan throughout the year 2024. The accord signifies a significant stride towards reinforcing bilateral cooperation in the energy sector, underlining the commitment of both nations to foster strategic partnerships aimed at addressing energy needs and advancing sustainable development within the region.

As outlined within the contractual agreement, the provisions entail the supply of a total of 1.8 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity through four distinct routes: Andkhoy, Aqina, Badghis, and Turgundi-Herat, as disclosed by the Government Media and Information Centre (GMIC) of Afghanistan in their report on Monday. This delineation of multiple routes signifies a concerted effort to establish efficient and diversified channels for the transmission of electricity from Turkmenistan to various regions within Afghanistan. Such strategic planning reflects a comprehensive approach aimed at bolstering energy accessibility and reliability across the designated areas, fostering sustainable development and ensuring a more resilient energy infrastructure for the Afghan populace.

As per the official announcement, Turkmenenergo has successfully finalized the construction of the 500 kV transmission line connecting Sheberghan to Argandab. This crucial infrastructure achievement signifies a pivotal step towards enhancing energy connectivity between Turkmenistan and Afghanistan. The operationalization of this newly established transmission line marks a significant milestone, poised to facilitate and amplify Afghanistan’s capacity to procure electricity from Turkmenistan. By bolstering the cross-border transmission capabilities, this development is poised to augment the accessibility and availability of electricity, fostering a more robust and sustainable energy network within Afghanistan while reinforcing bilateral cooperation between the two nations in the realm of energy supply and infrastructure.

The meeting also discussed the Nur-ul-Jihad substation project in Herat province.

In December last year, Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS), the Afghan power utility company, met with Turkmen officials to discuss electricity procurement 2024 and the expedited launch of the Nur-ul-Jihad substation in Herat province.
