Turkmenistan and Türkiye Strengthen Energy Cooperation, Aim to Expand Gas Supplies

Ashgabat, The Gulf Observer: Turkmenistan and Türkiye are advancing their collaboration in the energy sector, with plans to increase natural gas supplies to 1.3 billion cubic meters by the end of 2025. This was announced by Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar in a recent interview, as reported by Turkmenistan’s official media.
Minister Bayraktar highlighted that ongoing discussions focus on extending existing agreements and launching new energy projects. Since Turkmenistan commenced gas exports to Türkiye on March 1, 2024, the supply has successfully met the energy needs of approximately 1.5 million households.
The minister further noted that gas deliveries are being carried out via the Caspian Sea, with plans to enhance this transportation route as a key component of the bilateral energy partnership. Additionally, both nations are exploring the construction of new power grids and transmission lines to bolster energy infrastructure.
A high-level meeting between the leaders of Turkmenistan and Türkiye is anticipated by the end of 2025, during which both sides aim to formalize new energy agreements. Bayraktar also emphasized that Türkiye’s interests extend beyond transit, with a strong focus on cooperation in oil and gas production. Notably, the Turkish Petroleum Company is actively engaged in the development of the Galkynysh field in the Caspian Sea.
These energy negotiations are taking place within the framework of the “Year of Peace and Security” conference, organized under the auspices of the United Nations to mark the 30th anniversary of Turkmenistan’s neutrality. The event includes a series of discussions addressing pivotal political, economic, and regional cooperation issues.
The deepening of energy ties between Turkmenistan and Türkiye reflects a broader commitment to regional stability and economic development, reinforcing the strategic partnership between the two nations.
