Wang Yi and U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan Hold Talks in Beijing

Beijing, The Gulf Observer: China’s top diplomat Wang Yi met with U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan on Tuesday in Beijing, as the world’s two largest economies seek to maintain open channels of communication and stabilize their often turbulent bilateral relations.

During the meeting, Wang Yi, who also serves as a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs, acknowledged the challenges that have strained China-U.S. relations in recent years. He expressed hope that this new round of dialogue would promote the development of bilateral ties in line with the “San Francisco vision,” a reference to the strategic framework discussed by Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Joe Biden during their talks in San Francisco. Wang emphasized the need to “overcome distractions, remove obstacles,” and guide the relationship toward a “stable, healthy, and sustainable” trajectory.

Sullivan’s three-day visit to the Chinese capital marks his fifth meeting with Wang Yi, with their last encounter taking place in January in Bangkok, Thailand. The ongoing dialogue between the two senior officials builds on the candid exchanges between Presidents Xi and Biden, who met in San Francisco two months prior to set the course for China-U.S. relations.

Wang Yi stressed that the primary mission of this round of talks is to carry forward the spirit of mutual understanding reached by the two presidents, emphasizing a relationship based on “mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation.”

Sullivan agreed on the importance of collaboration between the two major economies, particularly in areas that can yield mutual benefits. He underscored the need to prevent competition from escalating into conflict and expressed his eagerness to advance the consensus reached by the two leaders.

The meeting reflects both nations’ commitment to navigating their complex relationship and ensuring continued dialogue to address shared challenges and opportunities.
