Qatar Showcases Leadership in Climate Action at COP29 in Baku

Doha, The Gulf Observer: Qatar delivered an impressive contribution at the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), held in Baku, Azerbaijan, from November 11 to 22, 2024.

The official Qatari delegation comprised representatives from several key governmental entities, including the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MECC), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, QatarEnergy, Qatar University, the Civil Aviation Authority, and the Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa).

Assistant Undersecretary for Climate Change Affairs at MECC, Eng. Ahmed Mohammed Al Sada, praised the delegation’s efforts, particularly the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change’s success in organizing Qatar’s national pavilion. The pavilion hosted numerous events, panel discussions, and dialogues, emphasizing Qatar’s commitment to international climate action.

Qatar’s participation highlighted key priorities, including advancing climate finance, enhancing transparency mechanisms, promoting nature-based solutions, and implementing projects to mitigate and adapt to climate change. These efforts align with the country’s National Vision 2030 and its National Environment and Climate Strategy 2024–2030, which aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, protect natural resources, and innovate sustainable practices.

The Qatari delegation reiterated the importance of global cooperation to tackle climate challenges, emphasizing the principle of “common but differentiated responsibilities” that recognizes disparities between developed and developing nations. Qatar called on developed countries to meet their obligations by providing financial and technological support to less-resourced nations.

A significant achievement of Qatar’s delegation was its active role in concluding negotiations on carbon markets under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, a major focus of COP29. Their contributions helped finalize mechanisms for carbon trading, review outcomes of the first Global Stocktake, and advance discussions on the Mitigation Work Program and the Global Goal on Climate Finance.

Qatar also organized side events at its pavilion, addressing pressing topics such as air quality, biodiversity conservation, renewable energy, emission reduction, water resource management, eco-tourism, and smart agriculture. These events demonstrated Qatar’s holistic approach to addressing climate change and its dedication to driving sustainable development globally.

Qatar’s engagement at COP29 underscores its leadership in fostering meaningful climate action and its resolve to contribute to a sustainable future for the planet.
