President Joko Widodo Appoints Teguh Setyabudi as New Acting Governor of Jakarta
Jakarta, The Gulf Observer: President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has officially appointed Teguh Setyabudi as the new acting governor of Jakarta, succeeding Heru Budi Hartono, who had served in the role since October 2022. The announcement was made by Ari Dwipayana, Coordinator of the Presidential Special Staff, on Thursday.
Hartono initially assumed office following the conclusion of Anies Baswedan’s term on October 16, 2022. Although Hartono’s appointment was originally scheduled to end in 2023, the Ministry of Home Affairs extended his term through October 2024 after a thorough evaluation of his leadership.
Teguh Setyabudi, who previously held the position of Director General of Population and Civil Registration at the Ministry of Home Affairs, emerged as the top candidate for acting governor after receiving the highest number of votes during a September meeting of the Jakarta Regional People’s Representative Council (DPRD). Setyabudi’s appointment marks the latest leadership change for Jakarta as the city prepares for its upcoming regional elections.
With over 8.2 million eligible voters, Jakarta residents will head to the polls on November 27 to elect their new governor and deputy governor. The race includes three candidate pairs: Ridwan Kamil and Suswono, Dharma Pongrekun and Kun Wardana, and Pramono Anung and Rano Karno.
The newly appointed acting governor is expected to manage the city’s affairs until the next administration takes over following the election results.
