Iran, Ethiopia Pledge to Strengthen Bilateral Ties and Leverage BRICS for Regional Cooperation

Tehran, The Gulf Observer: President Masoud Pezeshkian has highlighted the potential of the BRICS group as an important platform for enhancing interaction and deepening economic and political ties among member states.

President Pezeshkian made the remarks during a meeting with Speaker of Ethiopia’s House of Representatives, Tagesse Chafo, in Tehran on Saturday. He described BRICS as a new communication model that respects national sovereignty and cultural diversity, paving the way for equitable global cooperation.

The Iranian president also expressed his country’s interest in strengthening bilateral relations with Ethiopia. He emphasized that achieving this objective requires activating a joint cooperation commission, identifying common interests, recognizing complementary capacities, and fostering dialogue grounded in mutual benefits.

President Pezeshkian reiterated Iran’s readiness to play a responsible role in establishing and reinforcing sustainable peace and security in the region, advocating for a world free from war, violence, and conflict. He noted that individuals with deep insight into human nature prefer dialogue and cooperation over confrontation.

During the meeting, Speaker Chafo expressed satisfaction with the discussions and underscored Ethiopia’s commitment to enhancing relations with Iran, particularly in diplomatic, economic, and security sectors. He affirmed that the parliaments of both countries would support their respective foreign ministries in boosting diplomatic cooperation and deepening bilateral ties.

Highlighting the importance of economic collaboration, Chafo said Ethiopia is determined to expand trade exchanges, develop joint investments with Iran, and effectively utilize BRICS resources, including the New Development Bank, to strengthen economic and financial cooperation.

He also acknowledged the extensive cultural and civilizational ties between the Iranian and Ethiopian peoples, noting Iran’s significant role in promoting peace and security in West Asia. Chafo expressed Ethiopia’s aspiration to play a constructive and responsible role in the Horn of Africa, emphasizing that collaboration between the two nations on peace and security could contribute to lasting stability in both West Asia and Africa.
