Tajikistan Highlights Sustainable Development, Water Cooperation at UN Forum

Dushanbe, The Gulf Observer: Tajikistan reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable development and international water cooperation during the 2026 United Nations High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development, held at the UN Headquarters in New York on July 14.
Addressing the forum, Tajikistan’s Minister of Economic Development and Trade, Abdurahmon Abdurahmonzoda, underscored the country’s active role in advancing international water initiatives under the United Nations framework and contributing to the global water agenda.
The minister stressed that accelerating progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) requires stronger international partnerships, predictable and sustainable financing, and enhanced global cooperation to effectively address shared development challenges.
On the sidelines of the forum, Abdurahmonzoda held separate meetings with UN Development Programme (UNDP) Administrator Alexander De Croo and Director of the UN Office for South-South Cooperation Dima Al-Khatib.
The discussions focused on the implementation of Tajikistan’s Mid-Term Development Programme for 2026–2030, as well as efforts to localise the Sustainable Development Goals, promote economic digitalisation, expand the green economy, address climate change, protect glaciers, improve water resource management, and support sustainable industrial development.
The participants also exchanged views on the outcomes of the Fourth Dushanbe International Conference on the International Decade for Action “Water for Sustainable Development, 2018–2028”, along with its related side events, highlighting the importance of continued international collaboration in advancing the global water agenda.
The meetings concluded with both sides reaffirming their commitment to further strengthening cooperation in areas of mutual interest, particularly in sustainable development, climate resilience, and water resource management.
