Indonesia Signs Contract for 12 Italian Leonardo M-346F Block 20 Fighter Jets
Jakarta, The Gulf Observer: Indonesia’s Ministry of Defense has finalized a contract to procure 12 Leonardo M-346F Block 20 advanced fighter jets from Italian defense manufacturer Leonardo, marking a significant step in the country’s ongoing efforts to modernize its air force and strengthen pilot training capabilities.
According to Defense Ministry spokesperson Brigadier General Rico Ricardo Sirait, the aircraft will primarily serve as advanced training platforms for Indonesian Air Force (TNI AU) pilots while also supporting broader operational readiness in line with the country’s evolving air defense strategy. He said the procurement is intended to meet the Indonesian Air Force’s pilot training requirements and enhance combat preparedness.
The ministry stated that the M-346F Block 20 was selected for its advanced technical capabilities, which closely align with Indonesia’s strategic defense needs. Officials expressed confidence that the integration of the new aircraft will significantly strengthen the technological capabilities and operational effectiveness of the Indonesian Air Force.
The procurement contract has officially entered into force, with deliveries of the 12 aircraft expected to begin in 2030, subject to production schedules.
Once delivered, the Italian-made jets will complement the Indonesian Air Force’s existing lead-in fighter trainer fleet, which currently relies on the South Korean T-50i Golden Eagle aircraft used to prepare pilots for frontline combat platforms such as the F-16 Fighting Falcon. The TNI AU presently operates 22 T-50i aircraft assigned to the 15th Air Squadron at Iswahjudi Air Base in East Java.
The acquisition forms part of Indonesia’s broader military modernization program aimed at enhancing defense capabilities and ensuring the armed forces remain equipped to meet contemporary operational and security challenges.
