Azerbaijan Rejects Russian MFA Remarks on Garabagh, Reaffirms Territorial Sovereignty

Baku, The Gulf Observer: Azerbaijan has strongly rejected recent remarks by the Russian Foreign Ministry regarding the former Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict, describing them as a distortion of reality and inconsistent with Russia’s own longstanding official position on the Garabagh region.

Responding to a local media inquiry about comments made by Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Maria Zakharova concerning the Garabagh region and the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Aykhan Hajizade said the statements misrepresented the facts surrounding the former conflict.

Hajizade emphasized that the Garabagh region has always been internationally recognized, including by the Russian Federation, as an integral part of Azerbaijan. He stated that repeated attempts to revive discussions about the application of CSTO mechanisms to Azerbaijan’s sovereign territories, which had remained under Armenian occupation for nearly three decades, were entirely unfounded.

He further noted that linking the issue to whether Armenia had officially recognized the Garabagh region was inconsistent with Russia’s own declared position affirming the region as part of Azerbaijan.

Reaffirming Azerbaijan’s stance, Hajizade stressed that the country had restored its territorial integrity and sovereignty in full accordance with international law, thereby bringing the former conflict to a resolution.

He added that issues related to Russia-Armenia relations should not be associated with Azerbaijan, calling for an end to such commentary in official statements.

The remarks underscore Azerbaijan’s continued position that the Garabagh issue has been resolved following the restoration of its sovereignty and territorial integrity, and that any attempts to revisit the matter in international discourse are unwarranted.
