King Mohammed VI Names Morocco’s Longest Expressway After President Donald Trump
Agadir, The Gulf Observer: King Mohammed VI has said that Morocco’s decision to name the Tiznit-Dakhla Expressway after US President Donald Trump reflects the strength and depth of the longstanding strategic partnership between Morocco and the United States.
In a letter sent to President Trump on July 2, the Moroccan monarch announced his decision to name the landmark road infrastructure the Donald J. Trump Highway, describing the gesture as a tribute to the enduring friendship between the two nations.
King Mohammed VI noted that while Moroccan-American relations have historically been built on close friendship and steadfast loyalty, bilateral cooperation reached new levels of strength during President Trump’s two terms in office.
The King also recalled the United States’ 2020 recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces in Western Sahara, describing the decision as a historic milestone that “will forever be etched in the memory of Moroccans” and one that injected fresh momentum into Morocco-US relations.
“In homage to this testament of friendship and peace, and as a personal expression of My High consideration, I have taken the decision to name one of the Kingdom’s most important road infrastructures after Donald J. Trump Highway,” King Mohammed VI stated in his message.
Stretching more than 1,055 kilometers, the Tiznit-Dakhla Expressway is the longest road infrastructure project in Africa. The strategic corridor connects Morocco’s northern and southern regions while serving as a key gateway linking Europe with the African continent.
Describing the expressway as a project of major strategic importance, the King said it not only strengthens national connectivity but also reinforces Morocco’s role as a bridge between Europe and Africa. He added that the highway “unifies our country, just as your leadership has brought our two nations closer together in an unprecedented way.”
President Donald Trump expressed his appreciation for the honor in a message posted on his social media platform, Truth Social, on July 26.
“Thank you to His Majesty Mohammed VI, King of Morocco, highly respected. What a tremendous honor!” President Trump wrote, adding that he looked forward to traveling the full length of the highway “someday, and hopefully very soon.”
The naming of the expressway is widely seen as underscoring the continued evolution of Morocco-US relations, highlighting the two countries’ expanding cooperation in regional development, trade, infrastructure, and broader strategic affairs.
