Wanjiazhai Water Project to Replenish 255 Million Cubic Meters for Yongding River Restoration
Beijing, The Gulf Observer: Wanjiazhai, a pivotal water control project on the Yellow River, is set to contribute 255 million cubic meters of water to the Yongding River this year, supporting ongoing ecological restoration efforts in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region.
The Yongding River basin plays a critical role as a key water conservation area, ecological barrier, and corridor in the greater Beijing area and its surroundings. Since 2017, the Wanjiazhai diversion project has successfully diverted over 1.3 billion cubic meters of water from the Yellow River to the Yongding River, as reported by Wanjiazhai Water Holding Group Co., Ltd., headquartered in Shanxi Province.
Through collaborative endeavors involving stakeholders along the river basin, the Yongding River achieved an important milestone in 2023 by maintaining continuous water flow throughout the entire year. This accomplishment is noteworthy, marking the first time the river has sustained such flow since 1996.
The Yongding River traverses regions including Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, Shanxi Province, Hebei Province, and the cities of Beijing and Tianjin, covering a total distance of 759 km. The Beijing section alone spans 170 km, encompassing a basin area of 3,200 square km. The replenishment from Wanjiazhai serves as a crucial step in the broader ecological conservation initiatives aimed at preserving this vital water resource.
